When I was growing up and even now, I hear people say, “Never pray for patience. If you pray for patience, God will give you something to be patient about.”
Well, I was always confused with patience and how it was connected as a fruit of the Spirit.

Fruit of the Spirit is something that shines through us as the Holy Spirit becomes more evident in our lives.

So how did this connect? Well, it was finally revealed to me what all of this means so let’s see if I can convey it to you in this blog!

Patience is a fruit of the Spirit but only grows under trial. The word patience comes from the root word hupomone which means, “steadfast, constancy, endurance.” Patience is like faith, and both are like muscles, if you don’t use it, it becomes weaker and when you do use it consistently, it becomes stronger.

In James 1:3-4 the Bible states, “For you know that when your faith is tested, your endurance has a chance to grow. So let it grow, for when your endurance is fully developed, you will be perfect and complete, needing nothing.”

What does this all mean and how is our faith connected with patience? Let’s look at patience a little deeper.

When a person has patience, they are steadfast, disciplined, and they follow through or complete the tasks which they set out to do. Let’s look at the word in the above scripture, “endurance.” Endurance means the fact or power of enduring an unpleasant or difficult process or situation without giving way. Without giving way…in other words, steadfast which means resolutely or dutifully firm and unwavering. Loyal, faithful, committed, devoted, dedicated, dependable, reliable, steady, true, constant, solid, trusty.

So when you mature in the Spirit through the trials you go through, you develop patience, and when you do, you will lack nothing. You will learn to trust God, His Word, His timing, and His ways to the point that when the storm comes, and it will, you will have His perfect peace through it all.

So patience is not something that you pray for, it’s something that you develop through trials, times of testing, and maturity in Christ.

When your endurance becomes fully developed, you won’t even notice it until everyone is looking around you and asking you why aren’t you upset, why aren’t you dismayed and then you will know, James 1:4 you lack nothing, and you will be perfect and complete through Him.

You will stop depending on what you can see around you and you will solely depend on God’s Word and trust totally and completely in Him.

My faith and patience is not in man, but in God, for I know who I am in Him and “being confident of this, that he who began a good work in me will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.” Philippians 1:6

Stop looking at your trials as the enemy trying to get you and start looking at your trails as God trying to develop and perfect you!
